The Mourne Wall Challenge
The challenge consists of 33km and 3040m of elevation gain, the course traverses over 14 mountain summits and although the ground is good for most of the course you will encounter loose paths, bogland, steep descents and challenging climbs therefore a good level of experience is required on all types of terrain.
The Mourne Wall was built by the Belfast City and District Water Commissioners in 1904 and was completed 18 years later in 1922, and it marks and protects the water ‘catchment area’. It was built as a result of a typhoid outbreak in1898 which swept through the city of Belfast, and although there was no evidence found to blame the water supply that was pumped from the Mournes the question came up, what are you doing to protect the water from the livestock in the Mournes, and the rest was history.
Come join our experienced team of local guides for a challenging but memorable day in the Mountains of Mourne.
